(More customer reviews)I wanted a USB recording interface so I could record a little for fun and also for the benefits of USB audio output. This device looked like it fit the bill perfectly, and feature-wise, I think it does. Everything sounds great on paper - 96KHz/24-bit audio, dual mic preamps, phantom power, nice flat dials, USB-powered for portability, and good styling.
Those things are all true. It really is a cool little interface, and it worked nicely when it did. My favorite part was the audio quality: MUCH better than the headphone output of my MacBook Pro. I was astonished actually at how much of an improvement was, and it really made my ADS monitors shine.
That's why I really wanted to like it. But I couldn't. Let me list the issues.
Please note that this mainly applies to MAC users, as the drivers for PC are different and may work just fine. This is my experience with this device on a Mac.
* Driver instability. The original driver would snap crackle pop at loud parts of output and input.
* The 1.12 driver fixed that, but added unpredictability on whether the device would work when plugged in the first time. Often I had to unplug and plug it back in 2-3 times before it caught it.
* The 1.13 driver caused issues with iTunes, QuickTime, Songbird, and VLC ALL not being able to play any songs whatsoever. Sometimes I could get iTunes to work by restarting it. Eventually even that stopped working.
* The 1.12 firmware caused even more issues with programs, and eventually the output stopped working altogether. You cannot downgrade the firmware.
If you have a Mac, and want to use this thing, I recommend: 1. DO NOT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE, and 2. Upgrade the drivers to 1.12 ONLY. Do not go beyond that version.
I ended up ordering a Berhinger 802 Mixer (with 2 mic preamps and 8 total inputs) along with a Berhinger UCA202 USB Audio Interface (just a simple 2-in 2-out RCA audio interface) for the same capabilities. Hopefully that will work out better.
