I've owned this unit now for about 4 weeks.
Positive Features:
1. It can read any kind of disc: CD, DVD, CDRW, etc.
2. It can read different formats: I use WAV and MP3
3. It's convenient. I don't have to change discs everytime I want to practice a new song. I have all my tracks as MP3 on a CDRW, and I just type in the song number and there it is.
4. It's nice to have a remote control. I especially like the volume control feature. I can increase or decrease the track volume and my voice level remains the same. Good feature.
Criticisms:
1. This is not for "professional" applications. The RESPONSE of the machine is WAY too slow. For example: if I'm on song #3 and need to go to song #6, when I type in "6", I have to wait about THREE (long) seconds before the track changes. Hitting pause, play, and stop is equally slow. When I'm in a live situation, I need my machine to respond immediately. Solution: I have to record my live presentation tracks on a CDR(w) in the order I will need them, and use the SKIP (to next song) button to bring the next song in without any "dead air" (waiting time). This was a REALLY disappointing flaw for me.
2. Also, the MP3s don't sound that great at times, especially if I should change the key. They become "contorted" in way, which sounds worse as I move the key farther away from the original. (I haven't tried this with a WAV file though.) I guess MP3s are compressed files, so maybe I'm asking too much?
3. When using the key changer, it is not TRUE. In other words, if I'm trying to move 1/2 step away, I don't get a true 1/2 step - I get a "smidge" - you know, it moves a little bit, or a little bit more, but it's not calibrated.
4. It's annoying to me that everytime I plug the mic into the machine, I get the cheesey "echo" feature, and so I have to stop and turn it all the way down. Of course I just use the mic in the machine to practice; I wouldn't use it this way live.
5. There are NO READ OUTS! I thought I would see the title of my song, and other stuff on the display (as programmed into the files on my computer). All I see are the machine's track numbers, beginning with 001, 002, etc. I guess a person would need to hook this machine up to a TV or a computer to see the read outs, (which they call GRAPHICS or "G").
6. Because there are no read outs, I can't seem to figure out how to program the machine. When I press MENU, or other similar buttons, I get nothing in the display. That's lame.
7. Finally, the buttons that I use A LOT on the remote, like play, start, stop, pause, skip, etc. are really small. But the buttons I don't use (for programming mode) are quite big. Oh well.
When I took this machine out of the box, i thought it was REALLY light weight. This was my first clue that this machine is cheap. And it is. But, it does save me a lot of practice time, by having all my songs on one disc. And so, I accept the fact that it's a "low end" machine, and it works great for home use or practice.
I sing in concert, so I may consider using it live with WAV files only, on a preburned CD. But if I can find a true PROFESSIONAL machine with the same features, I would use that for live applications instead.
Bottom line: You get what you pay for. It's a fair machine - and it is useful - just beware of what you're actually getting.
