Sennheiser e838 Dynamic Microphone Review

This is a pretty good mic, solidly built. It's open and airy in the top end, and its high output means you won't have to work your mic preamp very hard. My first impressions of the mic were quite good, and I wrote a fairly glowing review, but after playing with it for some time, it does seem a bit thin in the lower mids, and a little boomy on the bottom, hence this revision. The shortcomings can be addressed with some EQ. It's also bit sensitive to breath noise, though a windscreen and/or good mic technique makes that a minor problem. My best guess is that this will be a very serviceable mic for someone whose voice is strong in the lower mids. I'm going to experiment with using it for miking instruments and guitar cabs. I think it will have a bit more sparkle than the traditional Shure SM57. Might work out great. So it's a good mic, but I don't see it replacing tried-and-true mics like the 57 and 58, the (much more expensive) Sennheiser MD421II, etc.
One final note: There is no such thing as "the best" microphone. So much depends on the application, the other equipment being used, and the individual performer's sound. One size definitely does not fit all. Give the E838 an audition before buying.
