Should probably have returned it for one that didn't appear damaged or seriously messed up, but instead chose to repair it myself. Sanded down the rust over 2 days, using a wire brush, due to the large amount of rust. Covered that with Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer (brown clay colored). After that dried for a couple of days, I applied Rustoleum flat black metal paint over the primer. Let that dry a couple of more days. Applied 3-in-1 oil to the screw and threaded hole in the side of the counterweight to prevent further rusting there. Looks better now and works great. Just needed some fixing up before it could be used. Really didn't want the rust transferring to whichever mic stand I left it on.
