If you are using a source microphone that is MONO, you will have some grounding issues with this adapter. It is specifically designed to work with microphones that are listed as stereo since it is wired to take stereo signals and split them to the inner and outer ring on the 1/8" end of the adapter.
If you go to the Hosatech website, you will see this particular description:
"This cable is designed to a connect a stereo microphone with a single XLR output to a mini stereo phone input. It is ideal for connecting a shotgun mic to a DV camera."
Just because you have a shotgun mic does not mean that it is a stereo microphone. And just to repeat the description in Amazon, "certain Stereo Microphones that use a single XLR as output for both Left and Right signals."
If you are using a MONO microphone, you are looking for the XVM102F. To try to help clear things up even more, notice the difference between XVM (M for MONO) and XVS (S for STEREO).
An example of some microphones that would work quite well with this particular adapter are the Nady CM-2S Stereo Condenser Microphone and the TASCAM TM-STPRO Stereo Condenser Microphone.
I have the Nady myself, and this adapter works quite well with hooking it up to a portable digital recorder as well as my wife's digital camera. It handles the stereo separation quite nicely.
Good luck!
