When I listened to the sound samples provided in their website, I was totally floored, it was so breathtakingly realistic! I had a long cherished desire to buy a Neumann KU100 , a dummy head binaural microphone, but could not afford its $10000 price tag. The 3D Mic Pro sound image appears remarkably as vivid as a KU100 recording samples which I have heard at kallbinauralaudio.com at almost one tenth of the price. I hesitated first as 3D Mic Pro is a brand new product and just introduced in the market with practically no reviews, however, I took a chance to try this American product and boy oh boy, I am overjoyed by this gem of a mic!
My mic arrived in a week by FedEx and the box contained all necessary cables and batteries to start recording. I connect it to my Canon 7D using the supplied attenuator cable and shoot some test videos. When I played the video in my laptop I was totally floored by the immersive quality of the sound! I have high quality professional stereo mics like Rode NT4, but they never produce recording so natural and surround like this one. The localization is so vivid that I can accurately point to any recorded sound source front, back left, right, above or under. It really makes me feel as if I am standing right inside the scene.
Although 3dmicpro recommends headphones for listening to get the best 3D audio experience, but I found it sounds just like very best surround recording in my Logitech 5.1 computer speakers connected to my laptop.
The build quality is really good, solid and feels reassuringly heavy in hand. I think it can withstand some rough field use. I like its black and red unique design, it definitely turns head which can sometime be a problem if you want to be discreet.
Bottom line: 3D Mic Pro is a game changer in immersive audio recording for prosumer community and brings the realism of 3D sound in handheld mobile devices and YouTube videos. It makes immersive recording affordable, easy and practical. I wanted to give it one extra star over 5 stars for being a made in USA product. Get a 3D Mic Pro and wow your audiences with 3D sound.
