(More customer reviews)I bought the Nady RSM-4 because I was curious about the sound of a ribbon microphone. I researched the Web and found so much information it took over a week to sort through it and arrive at a plan of action. I record my original music at home which is primarily folk music; this means I use a lot of acoustic instruments and some electric ones at times: the characteristics attributed to ribbon microphones increased my curiosity. Warmth and dynamic range are important to me and the Nady RSM-4 delivered these attributes as promised.
Further research lead me to numerous blogs and discussions by home-recording enthusiasts detailing simple , effective, and affordable modifications that claimed to improve the performance. I made the modifications -- removed some internal protective screening, swapped the transformer, and replaced the ribbon with a thinner one -- and found the claims were all true. The output became stronger with a more natural sound and I believe the effort has taken the Nady RSM-4 from good to excellent.
Though it is the only ribbon microphone in my collection, I am happy with it beyond my original expectations and use it exclusively for all my guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass tracks. Two more points, (1) ribbon microphones could use more gain than my recording mixer offered so I found the ART Tube MP Microphone Preamp to be a perfect addition; (2) The material and construction make this ribbon microphone easy to service by the user (a big plus since ribbon microphones are more fragile than other designs).
Why four stars instead of five? The original ribbon seemed to sag (as reported elsewhere on the web) and though this microphone is great for the money, the above indicated modifications are needed to achieve the very best this microphone can offer.
