(More customer reviews)Nothing screams "amateur" in a video like bad audio. Unless that is the effect that you are looking for, you're going to need to get beyond the microphone on that camcorder or camera. So, the first thing to do to get good audio with your video is to invest in a separate microphone. Now, although a good quality microphone is important, what is more important is getting that microphone close to the talent (or the interviewee, or family member, etc.) Lavaliers are in an excellent position to do that as they are pinned directly to the person you're filming, and make a huge difference over the microphone on the camera.
The Audio Technica Pro 70 is a good choice. It is low cost, can run on a battery or phantom power, and gets the job done. It is a balanced (XLR) mic, giving the videographer a good, clean signal. It isn't for everyone, however. You will have to buy an adapter if you have a camcorder with a miniplug, or else record your audio separately and sync it up with the footage later. It is a wired mic, so your subject can't be running around. In that case, a wireless lavalier or a boomed shotgun mic would be more appropriate. The power pack and the mic are permanently wired together, so if you want to use a different type or style of lavalier mic, you are out of luck.
All in all, when used in what it does best- interviews- it does an excellent job.
