(More customer reviews)I mated this with the Audio-Technica Pro 49QL 1.5" gooseneck microphone and the combo is working fine at a small local church. I was worried that the length might be excessive until I received it - turns out it's just about perfect for our podium.
When I first plugged the combo into the PA I got a very low and distorted level, tried the mic all by itself and it worked fine, then tried the combo again and everything started working - not sure what was going on. Before it started working I took the base unit apart and saw that there was a single 47k resistor in series with a large polar electrolytic placed across the balanced lines. Engaging the switch shorts out the resistor. A web search produced the same circuit at an audio forum with the comment that polar electrolytics can withstand small reverse voltages OK, which made me feel better about that aspect of the circuit. All I can figure is it took a minute or so for the electrolytic to start working correctly, so if it doesn't work initially, don't give up on it right away.
The mute button works well (it is a push on, push off, like a ballpoint pen works) and the weight of the stand is entirely adequate to keep the mic we used from tipping over, even on the inclined varnished surface of our podium.
UPDATE 2009-12-02:
Started getting complaints about noise from the PA that stopped if the mic mute button was pressed. I investigated this and concluded it was a noisy electrolytic. I took the bottom off and soldered a 1uF 250V poly cap in parallel with the electrolytic. While I was under the hood I soldered a 0.001uF ceramic cap from pin 2 to pin 1, and another from pin 3 to pin 1 in hopes that this would minimize any RF issues (cell phones blast all kinds of mush). Working fine now (knock wood) but I'm not happy that I had to work on something that should have been better designed in the first place.
