I was looking for something compact for my backroom studio so I put this boom on top of a typical Atlas stand with a 10 pound barbell weight around the base. It all works excellent except that I have to SUPER torque the boom to keep it from drooping under the weight of a large-diaphram condenser like a Rode NT1. I'm sure adding a counterbalance off of an old boom will work fine but not everyone has those laying around like I do, so be aware of that little issue.
