To start off, I'll say that I have not used top-quality mics, I am a 16 year-old getting started in music recording. The other mics I've used include the Studio Projects B-1 and Shure SM57/58's.
But this MXL 9090 is the best out of those three I have used. My vocals have more presence with the "warm" setting on this microphone, but I absolutely adore the "bright" setting, where my voice, without outside EQ, has a beautiful airy quality to it, with a silky treble register. Since I cannot afford more than a mic or two on a high-schooler's salary, I use this to mic up a piano as well, with fantastic results using either diaphragm.
One thing I have found is that this microphone is not the best for acoustic guitars, on its own. Perhaps a stereo pair will make it better..I am recording acoustics with the built-in microphones (stereo pair) on my Tascam DP-008. I use this as an ambient acoustic-guitar microphone.
Adding to the microphone's versatility are the 150Hz cut and -6db switches, enabling this microphone to record well even without a shockmount (that's saying a lot about how much money I can spend)..no rumbles, as long as I do not jump around like a maniac.
For me, there could not be a better microphone than this 9090 to start recording my originals, I am truly grateful I bought this mic instead of a AT2020 or comparable-priced microphone.
This is a great microphone to build a home-studio around.
